With each shiny, holiday-themed catalog I have received in the mail this week, I pushed it to the bottom of the pile thinking it’s waaaay too early to even think about Christmas shopping. I just finished gorging on Halloween candy.

Then I went to a hockey game last night only to be bombarded with Christmas trees and holiday tunes already in the lobby. And it hit me. Christmas is a measly 5 weeks away! Turns out it IS time to get moving on my shopping...only 35 days to hunt down the perfect gift for about as many people.

October was designated SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) awareness month, and we wanted to pass along some great info that has come across our desk during the month. We also thought it a timely follow-up to our recent post about Aden + Anais swaddle blankets and sleep sacks.

SIDS is unfortunately non preventable, but as parents, there is a lot we can do to reduce the risk factors, including:

Always placing your baby on his back at sleep time
Keep loose items out of the crib
Avoid overheating
Have regular tummy time workouts

This is of course a very short list, but there is some great info stored in the following documents, one of which is from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the other from the CJ Foundation for SIDS:

Brand Spanking NEW Burp Cloths

In our humble opinion, burp cloths are among the few true must haves for the first few months of your baby’s life.

We like to stash burp cloths all over the house for those unexpected moments when a fountain of milk strikes or when a diaper fails to live up to its leak-free promise.

We use them for changing mats in a pinch, shields from stray streams, and even props for a distracting game of peek-a-boo.

To Swaddle or to Sack, That is the Question

For a multitude of reasons, pediatricians recommend swaddling newborns for the first few months of their lives. Swaddling blankets decrease startle reflex awakenings, keep baby safely on his back, comfort by replicating the snug womb, help prevent overstimulation and possibly SIDS...the list goes on and on.

Eventually – though it can seem like an eternity – your little one will be naturally resting easier, longer, without the startle reflex, and he will be ready to move on from the comforts of the swaddling blanket.

But he can still surely benefit from being slightly contained in a “wearable” swaddle blanket, or sleep sack.

Elizabeth Pantley has birthed four children and 8 wildly popular parenting books, earning her the title of “expert” from the likes of Parents and Parenting Magazines, Woman’s Day, and Good Housekeeping.

In her “Gentle Baby Care: No-cry, No-fuss, No-worry -- Essential Tips for Raising Your Baby”, Pantley weighs in on colic and gives some helpful tips for soothing your baby (and your sanity!) until the sobbing subsides.

“Since colic occurs in newborns, parents often feel that they are doing something wrong to create the situation… The most important piece of research I discovered was this: It’s not your fault. Any baby can have colic… Remember that nothing you do will eliminate colic completely until your baby’s system is mature and able to settle on its own. Babies breeze through clothes faster than Paris Hilton through men. Before you even have time to rip the tags off that designer dress from your baby shower, your little one has somehow blown right past the size range altogether.

In honor of Spring (and the adorable clothes that come along with it!), I thought it timely to give some tips on organizing, storing, and getting rid of items no longer in use…at least until the next family member makes their debut.

When to Evaluate
Unless you’re the real Super Mom, weeding out the unusables each time you do laundry is simply unrealistic. For us normal folk, shooting for twice a year – or once each season – will do just fine. The seasons come with a natural reminder when it’s time to break out the sweaters or dig up the shorts. So make it easy on yourself and just tackle it when the weather demands.

What to Keep
There’s more to it than black and white, “keep” and “toss”. If you have a heart or plan to continue growing your family, there’s also “donate” and “hand-me-down”.

Keep anything your baby still wears or will still fit into by next season.
Toss everything that is stained, torn, or pilled. Nobody wants to be the smelly kid in class. *Tip* To give stained clothes a fighting chance, sprinkle some baking soda on the stain, then pour a small amount of club soda on the powder. Careful not to go overboard. Remember the volcano experiment from elementary school? Gently rub the mixture in with an old toothbrush.
Set aside anything that is still in top shape but no longer fits your baby. These will come in handy as handy-me-downs for your next kiddo.
Finally, start a pile of items that are in excess of what you need or that you have multiples of. Donating these will feel good to you, and even better to the lucky little one who truly needs them.

How to Organize
You can slice and dice the hand-me-down pile many different ways. You could organize by gender, size, age, or season, for example. There’s no right way, so just pick whichever method works best for you, but be consistent.

How to Store
Once you’ve decided on a method for separating the hand-me-downs for storage, find some sort of containers to keep things tidy and safe from bugs and mold. Large plastic bins are great if you have a lot of storage space, but vacuum-seal space bags are ideal if you’re cramped. They can even slide right under the crib or bed.

The last step is to devise some sort of labeling system so you know what’s what. The last thing you want to do is dig when it’s time to resurrect the reusables.

Developed by an RN, the SwaddleDesigns Ultimate Receiving Blanket is the perfect size and weight for traditional swaddling. They are made in America, wash beautifully, and have a cheat sheet stitched right on the label.

First, lay the blanket on a flat surface at an angle (it should look like a diamond), then fold the top corner of the diamond down about 6 inches. Place your baby on the center of the blanket with her head just above the 6 inch fold.

Step 1:
Pull the left side of the blanket across your baby’s chest (arms in!) and tuck the fabric snugly under her right side.

Step 2:

Before kiddos entered the scene, occasionally turning your eye from the funk growing in the corner of the shower was no big deal. Anything to avoid that monstrous chore, right?

But when adding a little one and an entire underwater toy store to the tub, that harmless little patch suddenly seems like an out-of-control plague that you obsess over each time your guppie hits the waters for bathtime.

Kids touch every surface, chew on every toy, and I’m sure even down a couple swigs of bathwater when you’re not looking.

Bath toys:
Avoiding porous or difficult to scrub items is key. Stick to larger items like boats, cups, and other hard plastic treasures. And ditch any toy that just won’t come clean – even if it’s a favorite.

At about six or seven months babies begin eating solids. Rice cereal, pureed bananas, mashed sweet potatoes are on your littles first menu. To paci or not to paci

Paci, binky, bo-bo, boppy, boop. That little piece of cry-cancelling silicone has more nicknames than Puff Daddy – excuse me, “Diddy”.

To paci or not to paci, that is the question. A question that haunts many new mommies as they consider all the options for calming a crying child.

Some parents go straight for the bink on day one, while others exhaust every other method – breastfeeding, rocking, walking, singing, swinging, midnight driving – before they resort to the evil pacifier.

But why the bad wrap? Yes, there are definitely a handful of legit cons to putting a cork in it. But what about all the paci pros? Since we over at Two Blue Peas are such huge fans of the WubbaNub pacifier, we thought we’d list a few for you to chew on.

A baby cries an average of three hours a day! That’s stressful for you and your little one. Pacis are a proven way to soothe. The sucking action is a normal infant reflex and undoubtedly helps calm a baby – approximately 75% of America’s babies to be exact. Many babies have the urge to suck when they are tired, bored, or need some comforting, not just when they are hungry.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the recommended sleeping position for your baby is on his back. Since the early nineties, the incidence of SIDS has been cut nearly in half thanks to mommies tucking in their tots safely on their backs.

But with so much of baby’s time spent snoozing on his back, “tummy time” during waking hours has become more important than ever.

The benefits of tummy time:

gives baby’s tender little skull a break from so much time spent on his back
builds upper body strength, which helps him to push up, roll over, sit up, crawl, and eventually stand and walk
encourages fine motor development by enticing him to reach for toys, the blanket, or you!

When and how often to have tummy time:

you can start as early as two months old if your baby is able to lift his head
the general consensus is up to 30 minutes per day (all at once or broken into smaller segments if needed)

How to engage in tummy time:

hold your baby on your chest while you’re lying flat on your back
hold your baby on your forearms instead of the traditional cradle hold

I love little tiny baby feet. Playing “this little piggy” with a 6 month old just fills my heart. But, as much as I love bare baby feet, winter weather makes it necessary to cover them up. Thankfully there are so many great shoe options for walkers and non-walkers alike.

Baby toys: back to basics

Over the holidays, my husband and I were lucky enough to have our two year old nephew in town for a visit. Not only is my house far from baby proofed and filled with glass bobbles and vintage collectibles, but the only toys I have lying around are the mouse-shaped, catnip-filled variety. Hardly enough to keep a toddler pacified for three minutes, much less three days straight.

To my Dad’s chagrin, thank goodness my Mom stashed our old favorites away in the attic “just in case”. As I dug through the treasures of 1970’s wooden blocks, stuffed animals, Little People, puzzles, and books, I noticed something – or the lack thereof I should say.

The most technological (if you can call it that) one of the bunch was the scratch-n-sniff paperback edition of Bambi. No blinking lights, no obnoxious sounds, no batteries required. Just a fingernail, a tiny nose, and a little imagination.

I completely understand the value of today’s electronic toys that teach little ones to count and spell practically before they can walk. LeapFrog and Discovery Toys are absolutely brilliant, and fun for even adults to tinker with.

But I do wish more parents would also look to handmade toys and basic teaching tools like wooden puzzles, blocks, and pretend food. Wide open minds and bright imaginations are what make kids so amazing. And I have to believe that fostering creativity in this way does make a child just as smart, sharp, and inventive as the one playing with the turbo-charged, sing-a-long, glow-in-the-dark learning pod.

I bring all of this up to encourage people to support handmade and help make sure small businesses like Lilly Bean Play Food stay alive to provide our kiddos with such fantastic goods.

In case you have not yet heard, the Unites States Congress recently passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) which mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys, and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.

All of these things will be easy for large, multinational manufacturers to comply with because of the sheer volume they produce. But for small toy makers, the costs for testing and labeling will likely drive them out of business. The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of children's goods that have earned and kept the public's trust: toys, clothes, and accessories made in the US, Canada, and Europe.
