No. 2 = Lower IQ?

Does birth order really have an impact on our IQ? There’s a whole slew of theories about the why and the how much, but a lot of folks seem to think that IQ decreases (even if only slightly) with each successive kiddo.

As second (and third, and fourth, and fifth...) children, we already have to deal with the fact that our photo albums are considerably slimmer than our older siblings’. Their books are chock full of photos, firsts documentation and other random tidbits like locks of hair and hospital bracelets. We’re lucky if our original birth certificates still exist in a dusty shoe box somewhere.

Now you’re telling me I have to worry that my theoretical lower IQ might be due to the fact that my parents weren’t as excited about my arrival? OK, I know that’s a tad dramatic. My parents love me just as much as my fabulous older sister.

I don’t know if there’s any merit to this theory, but I do wish I had known about it earlier in life. It could have been used as some serious leverage to weasel out of punishment for sneaking out and talking back.
